A major platform for smartphones. Based on the Symbian operating system, Series 60 provides a standardized interface, and a standardized platform for developers to create advanced applications for phones.
Series 60 was developed by Nokia. Nokia uses Series 60 for its own smartphones, and also licenses the platform to other phone manufacturers, such as Siemens and Samsung.
As with other major smartphone platforms, Series 60 requires a large color display, a powerful processor chip, a large amount of memory for storing applications and content, (usually expandable with memory cards,) and a standard set of keys for input and control.
Series 60 phones can run applications and games written for the platform, as well as Java applications and games.
Unlike PDA-based platforms and certain other Symbian-based platforms, Series 60 does not provide for a touch screen or pen input.
